WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE: MD., D.O. & H.M.D.?

As more and more people consider both alternative and complementary treatments and physicians, the questions often arises, "What is the difference between an M.D., D.O., and an H.M.D.?

M.D.

A Medical Doctor, or M.D., is a physician who has obtained a four year college degree, has completed four years of medical school and a one year rotating internship. With this degree, a person can choose to practice in a specialty area, which requires successful completion of a 2 to 6 year residency program. They must pass both national and individual state board exams in order to obtain a license to practice medicine. Medical doctors practice a conventional style of medicine. They look for a pattern of symptoms to diagnose a disease and then implement a standard treatment plan, which frequently consists of prescription medications and various procedures.

D.O.

A Doctor of Osteopathy, or D.O., must fulfill the same rigorous training and licensing requirements as a medical doctor. In addition, they receive extra training in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), and emphasize the role of the Musculoskeletal system. By using OMT, D.O.s are able to diagnose injury and illness with their hands and then use manipulation techniques to enable the body to heal itself. Osteopathic physicians focus on preventative care and total wellness as well as conventional medicines. Part of the philosophy behind osteopathic medicine, is the importance of treating the cause of a patient's illness in relation to the whole person and promoting the body's innate ability to heal its self..

H.M.D.

A Homeopathic Medical Doctor or H.M.D., is a highly trained physician who must be an M.D. or D.O. with completion of a minimum of a three year residency program. In addition, they must have special training in homeopathy and alternative medicine. Only three states in the U.S. have homeopathic licensing boards: Nevada, Arizona and Connecticut. The H.M.D., believes in treating the cause of a disease and not just the symptoms by customizing homeopathic and natural medicines.
